Au pairs are here on an J1 Visa which includes an educational requirement, it is important that they meet their commitment or they will lose their deposit.  Here is some information of local educational opportunities. 

ODU is offering a  Language/Culture class for Au Pairs.  It is a 7-week class and it is worth 3 credits.  It is 2 nights a week (Tues & Thurs) for 2 hours ( 7 pm to 9 pm).  The tuition will be $400.00.  If you are interested you need to contact Anne Geyer.  Her number is 683-3986.  You pay the first night of class either by check or Visa/MC. 

ODU also has a daytime ESL class.  One class is 3 credits.  It is 1 hour a day, 5 days a week for 7 weeks.   It cost $470.  Call 683-4424.  You must take an English test for placement.

Tidewater Community College is an option, if you contact Tanya prior to signing up for classes we can make the classes affordable at $170.85 per credit.  You must take a test prior to selecting classes to evaluate your English level.  http://www.tcc.edu/.   

Step 1.  Register to attend TCC.  You can do this online or in person.

Step 2.  Go to the college, to the Cashier and pay the $4 for the testing fee.

Step 4.  Counselors will let you know what classes you are qualified to take.

Step 5.  Decide what classes you want to take, send the information to Tanya along with your student ID number.  Tanya will fill out a form for you.  Pick up the form, pay Tanya for the class.  Take the form to the registration office and register for the class, giving them the form in place of payment.  Tanya will pay the college for the class.

Thomas Nelson Community College - Hampton - Au Pair Education Enrichment Program

Richmond College - This course is in Richmond, cost $325 per weekend for 3 credits.  It includes 4 meals, but does not include nor arrange a place to stay.  http://scs.richmond.edu/personal/au-pair/courses.html

Weekend in Maryland - This is a weekend of courses in Maryland.  www.aupairweekend.org    The cost is $250 - $350 for the weekend, which includes room and board, not transportation.  The price differs based on how early you sign up.  It is only one weekend per month.  Go to the website for the schedule and to sign up.

Virginia Beach Adult Learning Center:

The CEU's at the VB Adult Learning Center are sponsored by Old Dominion University, which is accredited so they will count for your credits.  However, the ESL classes are NOT for CEUs and DO NOT count.  The classes are very affordable though and a good option if you want to improve your English.  http://www.adultlearning.vbschools.com/

IMPORTANT:  If you take a class at the Adult Learning Center, YOU MUST pay the extra $20 per class to get the CEU certificate from ODU.  The class will NOT be accepted by Cultural Care or the State Department without the ODU certificate.
